Smooth as a polished stone, with beautiful grain patterns and a glittering diamond cut curb chain, these pendants are unusual and special.
The wearing of a talisman in the shape of an eye is said to be a ward against the malignancies caused by the Evil Eye.
The Evil Eye is encountered in many cultures and brings misfortune or illness to those on whom it has been cast by an envious or covetous other. This person might not necessarily be evil themselves but it is their greed and longing that bring the curse.
The belief supposedly originated in ancient Sumer and has spread throughout Europe, India and the Middle East but is apparently absent in oriental cultures. In Hebrew it is known "asayin ha'ra", in Italian, "mal occhio" and in Spanish "mal ojo" or simply "el ojo". In Gaelic it is "an droch shùil".
This piece has been cut from pale Birch (representing growth and renewal), and fitted with a brown Wych Elm iris (representing death and the underworld) and finally a pupil of Larch (representing protection from evil spirits). The Larch has been treated with a homemade dye to render it as black as ebony, which for environmental reasons I do not like to use unless there is no alternative.
After fitting together the eye was hand carved with a small knife. A thin coating of resin was applied before polishing to a smooth finish to give a tough, durable, water resistant coating.
Please note the price is for the pendant only. For an additional £4.00 you can add a sterling silver diamond cut curb chain or a leather cord with a handmade clasp by clicking here: https://www.commonmarket.scot/en/listings/432479-upgrade-add-a-silver-chain-or-a-leather-cord
The pendant comes in a matt black presentation box with a small leaflet explaining the Evil Eye legend and the symbolism of the woods used.
All of the wood used has come from healthy wind-blown branches found across Scotland and has not been milled commercially. Only hand tools were used in the manufacturing process. Due to the nature of the grain patterns in wood and because every item is hand made and judged by eye, all of The Conker Tree's pieces are completely unique.
