Cut and carved completely by hand in the heart of Scotland. The wood is from a branch I found while on holiday in April ‘16, the distinctive black lines of spalting contrast with the pale wood of the Birch tree in this glossy, smooth, lightweight pendant necklace. With this piece the wood has done the talking, shape being decided by the wood rather than the carver’s will and the steel’s bite.
The pendant was finished with a resin coating, for water and wear resistance before being polished to a high gloss.
The black lines and other discolouration in the piece (spalting) in this piece has occurred due to colonisation by a fungus before the wood had a chance to actually rot.
Please note the price is for the pendant only. For an additional £4.00 you can add a sterling silver diamond cut curb chain or a leather cord with a handmade clasp by clicking here: https://www.commonmarket.scot/en/listings/432479-upgrade-add-a-silver-chain-or-a-leather-cord
The pendant ships in a matt black presentation box with a small leaflet outlining some of the history, uses and folklore surrounding the wood.
The pale wood of the Birch is used in a variety of woodworking applications and the tree itself has a long list of other uses (principally from the bark) that include basket making, glue making and tinder. Birch also had a place in Celtic folk medicine. It is one of the sacred trees of the Druids and the symbolic Celtic meaning of the birch tree is Growth, Renewal, Stability, Initiation and Adaptability.
Birch is widely abundant throughout Scotland. It is a pioneer tree, taking root first where clearance or fire has made room for it and the tree thrives in the harsh landscape and climate of Scotland’s north.
The pendant is shipped in a small matt black presentation box with a leaflet explaining a little of the history, uses and folklore surrounding the wood.
Due to the natural variability of wood and because everything we do is completely handmade, all of The Conker Trees products are completely unique in appearance.
