This unusual pendant, hand made in central Scotland, represents the symbol for the Sun, which has been applied to the wood using the element of fire. The blackened area extends to the back and side, and has a velvety sheen. After charring the pendant has been lightly sanded to remove loose char and treated with oil to preserve and accentuate the wood and the charred area.
Please note the price is for the pendant only. For an additional £4.00 you can add a sterling silver diamond cut curb chain or a leather cord with a handmade clasp by clicking here: https://www.commonmarket.scot/en/listings/432479-upgrade-add-a-silver-chain-or-a-leather-cord
The pendant is shipped in a small matt black presentation box with a leaflet explaining a little of the history, uses and folklore surrounding the wood.
The wood used is Birch, the Lady of the Woods. This pale wood is used in a variety of woodworking applications and the tree itself has a long list of other uses (principally from the bark) that include basket making, glue making and tinder. Birch also had a place in Celtic folk medicine. It is one of the sacred trees of the Druids and the symbolic Celtic meaning of the birch tree is Growth, Renewal, Stability, Initiation and Adaptability.
Birch is widely abundant throughout Scotland. It is a pioneer tree, taking root first where clearance or fire has made room for it and the tree thrives in the harsh landscape and climate of Scotland’s north.
Due to the natural variability of wood and because everything we do is completely handmade, all of The Conker Tree's products are completely unique in appearance.
