This incense stick holder has been cut and carved by hand in central Scotland from a spalted beech log. It has been hand sanded to a fine grade and finished with linseed oil. The style is an elongated bowl and thanks to the spalting patterns it is a unique, one of a kind item.
The mottling and black lines come from various fungi that colonise wood in the beginning stages of rotting. Once the rotting process is stopped by drying the wood remains stable. The black lines are not actually a fungus but mark the borders between different species of fungus as they vied for territory within the wood.
It measures approximately 21cm (8") long and 4.5cm (1.75") wide.
Having used incense stick holders for some time I find the ones that I usually come across have ash catching channels that are shallow and narrow. My holders have a deeper and wider groove, meaning less precision lining up of the stick, less trips to the bin, and greater surety that the ash will stay in the catcher.
